President Yoweri Museveni has been asked to ensure cooperation with the International Criminal Court instead of undermining it yet Uganda ratified to the Rome statute that intended to stop impunity across.
The Human rights activists under the Uganda Coalition on the International Criminal Court expressed dismay over the president’s recent remarks in regard to the Court and the appearance of the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying these were self-serving statements.
Condemning the Musevneni’s negative remarks to the ICC, the Chief Executive Officer Human Rights Network Uganda Mohammed Ndifuna says the statements are not isolated but the president and other African leaders have consistently similar attacks.
Ndifuna said that Museveni and other African leaders should respect and comply with the constitutive Act of the African Union that provides for the union to intervene against serious crime against humanity and also reject impunity. He adds that instead of demonizing the court, member states that have also referred cases should work towards strengthening the independence of this institution.
Meanwhile the chairperson of the Foreign affairs committee of parliament Sam Okuonzi says that the court has not satisfactorily executed its mandate and therefore member states are free to pull out. Also Vuura County MP, Okuonzi is optimistic that African Countries can have their own court systems that can office justice and address impunity.
