The older persons of Uganda have petitioned members of the Buganda parliamentary caucus seeking for their support in regard to their demands as a way of promoting their lives.
These older persons earlier petitioned the speaker of parliament raising a number of issues including matters related to their social protection and the social assistance grants for empowerment which they say have not been accorded the due attention.
In their meeting today with the members of the Buganda parliamentary caucus led by their chairman John Orach, the older persons told the members that the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment has failed to realize its intended objectives because majority of them have not yet benefited from the fund.
The objective of this fund was to see every older person above the age of 60 receive Ug.Shs 25,000 every month to help in their empowerment but a few districts have been covered.
Meanwhile the members have pledged to support the cause of these older persons saying that their lives need to improved through the different government programs, and the chairperson of the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi, noted that they need to supported.
In the same way the mp for Bukomansimbi Deogratius Kiyingi has claried that the social assistance grants to the older persons is the mandate of government and it should not be taken to be a favor.
On the other hand the chairperson of Mubende Older Persons Association Raphael Isagara has noted that government has got all the funds required to address the plight of older persons, further advising that the young people should be educated on how to make long term investments as a way of brightening their future.
