Members of parliament on the Committee of Government Assurances were saddened by the poor state of hospitals in Karamoja sub region. This was during the committee’s tour to the Karamoja sub region to examine the different pledges made by government to the people of Karamoja.
The Acting Chief Administrative Officer of Abim district Mr Nelson Olwit told Members of Parliament that Abim Hospital does not have running water and is functioning without a medical doctor. Olwit stated that Abim hospital has for four years not had any running water; patients fetch water from outside the hospital and it’s the same water used in washing patients in some instances in operations by doctors.
He added that because of the bad state in which the hospital is, the district had failed to attract any medical doctor, and is currently functioning without one. The Committee Chairperson of Government Assurance Hon. Wadri Kassiano wondered how government could ignore such a hospital that serves the entire district of Abim and other areas of Karamoja
Among the unfulfilled pledges that came up during the committee tour was the coding of community schools that was promised by the Minister of Karamoja Affairs.
