Members of Parliament urged government to fast-track the compensation and resettlement of the persons affected by the oil refinery construction so as it commences according to the schedule. The project is to affect 7,118 persons of which 2,708 are property owners on 29 square kilo metres.
The MPs noted in a report presented to parliament by the Natural resources chairperson Michael Werikhe that 2,615 persons want to be paid in cash while 93 opted for resettlement so as they relocate. Government is to spend close to 35 billion shillings to compensate all affected persons by the refinery project in Kabaale parish, Buseruka sub-county in Hoima district.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development told MPs that the ministry is in final stages of contracting a lead investor for the construction of the long awaited refinery to have the first oil produced on market in near future. She revealed that the waste management facilities are now available in oil areas to meet the standards of producing oil.
