As climate change effects continue to become real in the face of Ugandans, government is now taking the issue by the horse’s mouth by now undertaking a vulnerability risk assessment in areas that have previously suffered a series of natural disasters associated with climate change.

While in the policy action on Climate Change Adaptation Learning Alliance meeting today in Kampala, the Commissioner Climate Change Unit in the Ministry of water and environment, Chebeti Maikut, stated that the risk assessment study is intended towards identifying mitigations to climate change effects in the hot spot areas and the country as a whole and domesticating government actions on mitigating and adapting to impacts of climate change.

He notes that the study is currently being carried out in Mt. Elgon and Rwenzori areas and the cattle corridor areas. However, he also notes that government directed cabinet to fast track the Climate change bill to have it passed into law which the Commissioner wants passed within this financial year to help address climate change impacts in the country.

The meeting is geared at raising agriculture food security by using interdisciplinary science based recommendations to influence policy implementation to encourage adaptation of climate smart agriculture practices across multiple scales and actors.
