The out going chancellor for Makerere university, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera welcomes the new chancellor Prof. Ezra Suruma with a warning on the inadequate funding towards the university from government which has crippled service delivery at the institute. Kagonyera while giving his remarks at the installation ceremony yesterday at Makerere said, govenment should not rely on tuition fees among other fees paid by students to run the university noting that it should increase the budget allocated to Makerere for helping to fund the long term programme at the institution like infrastructure development among others.
Kagonyera now says the continuous strikes by both students and lectures and the support staff is due to the under funding from government to the institute.
However, the incoming chancellor, Dr. Ezra Suruma pledges to move Makerere to greater heights so as to produce products that are competitive in the job market. But the vice chancellor, Prof, Ddumba Ssentamu applauded Prof Kagonyera for serving the institute for the last 8 years as he welcomed the new chancellor whom he says brings along unique insights to the varsity.
Dr. Ezra now becomes the 3rd non state chancellor of Makerere university.
