Health workers selling free drugs

The ministry for health warned health workers in West Nile against selling drugs meant for testing and vaccinating people against Hepatitis B. The warning came after Moyo woman MP Ann Auru told parliament that some health workers in her district are charging people shs 3000 to carry out tests on them about this disease.

However, health state minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi says the ministry is going to follow up on this matter, adding that these drugs are for free and he was surprised that some people are being forced to pay for this service. He told parliament that government plans to broaden the exercise of testing and vaccinating against Hepatitis B to all districts across the country in case funds are availed to the ministry.

Baryomunsi told parliament that the ministry had requested for 39bn to respond to this epidemic in northern Uganda but parliament gave out only shs10bn and that the ministry decided to begin with worst affected districts in West Nile which had between 20-23% cases, Kitgum had 11%. However now the exercise will cover all other parts especially eastern where the epidemic has been reported.
