The South Sudanese Student’s Union in Uganda has held a march through the city of Kampala that was meant to show their support for the separation of Southern Sudan from the Khartoum Government led by President Omar El Bashir.

The march which attracted over 2000 Southern Sudanese living in Uganda had some of the marching people carrying banners that agitated for the separation of Southern Sudan from the Khartoum
government.

While presenting a memorandum in support of independent Southern Sudan to representative of the Southern Sudan government, the Secretary General of the Students Union Lincoln Kocdak said that the
Southern Sudan government should be independent because it is in the interest of the people of Southern Sudan for it to be independent.

He says for instance the people of Southern Sudan are tired of the having the Khartoum government impose on them Arabic Values yet the biggest population of Southern Sudan is Christian.

According to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January 2005 between the Sudna government and then Sudanese People’s Liberation Army which formed the Southern Sudan government, Southern Sudan was promised that it would be allowed to conduct a referendum on self determination which referendum is set to take place on January 9 2011.

However Kocdac says that though the referendum on self determination is next year, the CPA is under threat as the North has threatened war against Southern Sudan if the people of Southern Sudan votwe to secede from the north of Sudan.

The Students have promised to fight for the referendum and are now campaigning that the South becomes independent from the North.
