THE electoral commission has put on halt its earlier plans of organizing local council one and two elections over lack funds.
While appearing before parliamentary committee on legal affairs, the chairman of the commission, Badru Kiggundu the commission came to the decision after failing to secure the required money to run the exercise.
Kiggundu says that at first they had expected to spend money in trillions to conduct the elections but they were asked to make necessary changes until they came up with 37billion, adding that of this, they were finally provided with only 7billion shillings which he says is not enough to conduct the whole election exercise.
The electoral commission boss also informed the committee that he is not open to the idea of having a commission represented by all political parties as this will affect timely decision making.
He instead wants government to appoint new commissioners for the commission citing that apart from one commissioner whose name he has recommended for contract renewal the rest will have to leave by 17th November and hence would not want a vacuum to be created when they leave.
Kiggundu also wants government to provide them with funds to shift to a new place as the ministry of works on behalf of Kampala fly over construction and road upgrading project informed them of plans to start the project will start at the end of the year and hence necessitates them to find alternative accommodation.
