The Member of Parliament for Butebo County, Fred Mudukoi Oduchu, says the recent report by the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) that indicated that over 80 percent of primary school teachers can neither read nor count is untrue on the basis that for one to qualify for enrollment at a teachers’ college, they should have passed mathematics and English.
Oduchu, a teacher by profession argues that joining the teachers’ colleges is on merit and there is no way one can pass at the different levels of education and then fail when already a professional.
He instead argues that government is to blame for not putting in place refresher courses for teachers and adequately supervising teachers to ensure quality standards.
Oduchu says government needs to monitor teachers and carry out necessary evaluation instead of lamenting about the poor quality of education in schools today.
