The Uganda National Teachers Union has today launched a quality educators project aimed at addressing challenges affecting the quality of education.
The project is to kick off in northern Uganda, which has registered major challenges in terms of poor performance.
The teachers’ union secretary general, Teopista Birungi says the project will help ensure that more teachers are posted to Northern Uganda to fill the existing gaps.
Meanwhile, speaking at the same function, the Minister of education, Namirembe Bitamazire expressed concern over the teacher pupil ratio in the country.
Bitamazire says the teacher pupil ratio currently stands at 1 teacher per 67 pupils, which is higher than the recommended 1:50.
Bitamaze says they need over 240.000 teachers, to fill the existing gaps, if the country is to achieve the Millennium development goals by 2015.
