Parliament has ordered the Minister of science Technology and innovation to retable the Biotechnology and biosafety bill which was rejected by the president for parliament to initiate changes to suit the standards in which the president wants it to be.

“Retable this bill on Wednesday this week,” Deputy speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah directed the Hon. Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye while reading to parliament the president’s letter written to parliament giving grounds of rejecting the bill.

On returning the bill to parliament, the president’s demands will be considered and included in the bill or rejected by members of parliament.

The bill was sent to the president for signing into law but returned the bill to parliament saying it  gives the monopoly of patent rights to researchers without due regard to indigenous communities that developed the original materials.
