Cristiano Ronaldo dropped a huge hint that he will be staying at Real Madrid, despite casting doubt over his future following the Champions League final.
During celebrations the day after his side’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool, Ronaldo told supporters: ‘See you next year.’
He was given a hero’s welcome as fans chanted his name and the striker went on to add: ‘I feel proud to play for the biggest club in the world.
‘I’m very comfortable here. With these players it’s impossible not to win.’
Thousands of supporters turned out to greet Zinedine Zidane’s history-making side, who began their celebrations with a service at the Almudena cathedral before visiting the city chambers and later the city hall, addressing gathered fans in the Plaza del Sol.
And those assembled to greet their idols will have been heartened by Ronaldo’s change of tune.
After the final whistle in Kiev, he had stunned supporters by suggesting his future with Real is far from certain.
He’d said: ‘In the coming days there will be answers about my future. It has been very nice playing for Real Madrid.’
The Portuguese later went on to add: ‘I have won five Champions Leagues and five Ballon d’Ors. I had already made history, but now even more.
‘I’m not upset because I know what I give to the club. I don’t want to erase this unique moment, with my colleagues who are champions.
‘I cannot guarantee anything. I’m not going to hide, in the next few days I’ll talk… Life is not just about glory.’
The picture for Real fans is now rosier after his most recent remarks but no doubt the saga will run throughout the summer until a resolution is announced.
