The Prime Minister Prof. Apollo Nsibambi has warned that Non Governmental Organisations in Uganda will face sanctions if they fail to disclose their sources of income.
Nsibambi who spoke to journalists in Kampala says that his office and that of the Ministry of Internal Affairs have put in place a mechanism under which various NGOs must disclose their
sources of funding, the amounts of money they receive and the programs that they intend to implement using that money.
He says that the importance of this is to avoid situations where NGOs undertake to carry out activities that the government has already undertaken which is equivalent to duplicating government programs.
Prof. Nsibambi says the government in trying to avoid this duplication of activities and is seeking to ensure that NGOs are aligned to the National Planning Framework which facilitates ability of the government to properly plan for its people.
The Prime Minister says that the NGOs that will fail to comply with this arrangement which is aimed at enhancing the planning efficiency of the government will face sanctions from government.
“Some NGOs do an excellent piece of work, others do not and we need to ensure that those that do not do their work well do it well,” Prof. Nsibambi said.
