The Inspector General of Government Rapheal Baku is blaming his failure to catch the big fish in the fight against corruption on inadequate resources.
The IGG has often been accused of targeting the lower level officials in government while the higher ranking officials, who take even more of the tax payers’ money in corrupt practices continue to go scot free.
Baku says, out of the 31 billion shillings the inspectorate requested for last year, only 18 billion shillings was approved by parliament, leaving significant gaps.
He says big officials engage in complicated corruption practices which require a lot of resources and technology to track. Baku was on Friday addressing a meeting of IGGs from Africa who met at the Commonwealth Resort in Munyonyo, Kampala.
Baku says there is need to beef up the capacity of the Inspectorate of Government through allocation of more funds and equipment needed for investigations such as recorders and cameras.
The IGGs from Africa are pledging to work with the African Union to fight corruption on the continent.
