The Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen, Kale Kayihura has appealed to Ugandans to desist from victimising Somalis and Moslems accusing them of being terrorists simply because they have been told that the people behind the terror attacks are the Al Shabaab and Al Qaeda network the two groups having professed to the Islamic religion and the other group being of Somali origin.
Since the time the bomb blasts hit Uganda on July 11th leaving over 76 people dead and over 50 people injured, there have been reports of attempts by some Ugandans to victimise Somali’s and calling them terrorists. Other Ugandans have reportedly attempted to associate the bomb attacks with Islam despite attempts various Muslim leaders who have seriously disassociated Islam from the terrorist attacks.
Kayihura has told Journalists in Kampala that becoming a terrorist does not depend on nationality or religion as even a Christian can be influenced into terrorism.
He says for example some of the suspects arrested as a result of attacks were originally Christians but only converted to Islam and that most of the suspects arrested in relation to the July 11 attacks were Kenyans, not Somalis that are being victimized.
He says Ugandans should thus stop victimizing people based on religion and nationality and leave the police and sister security agencies to identify and prosecute the real terrorists.
