The government of Uganda has been called upon to increase investment in promoting maternal and child health if the gains made in empowerment of women are to be maintained and improved.
The call was made by Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga was addressing delegates to the 5th Regional Meeting of Parliamentary Committees on Health in the Eastern and Southern Africa (SEAPACOH) at the Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo Kampala
Kadaga says that although Uganda has registered considerable progress in education, women empowerment, HIV/AIDS fight, poverty eradication, improving women’s health remains a challenge with maternal mortality figures still high.
She says there is need for massive investments in the health sector to curtail the current high rate of maternal and child mortality in Uganda and other developing countries.
“We in Uganda believe that investing in maternal and child health including emphasizing reproductive health and family planning is very crucial for the future of our nation.” She argued.
She noted that, Uganda’s reproductive health and family planning services remain mainly urban-based yet the majority of women are in rural areas.
