President Yoweri Museveni has met and held discussions with Bugisu’s cultural leader Umukuuka, Uwelukoosi Wilson Weasa Wamimbi at State Lodge in Mbale.
The Umukuuka who led a delegation of various leaders presented a memorandum of the Masaaba Cultural institution to the President in which they are seeking government intervention in the degazetment of Part of the National Forest Authority land surrounding the Mbale Municipal Council to compensate for the land that was taken over by the Bugema Military Barracks.
The institution, according to Umukuuka, intends to develop a well planned satellite town and to build a cultural museum there.
The institution also called for government support for a hydro power generation plant by Elgon Power Generation Company on river Buyembe to generate 10 megawatts of power. They also wanted government to intervene and save Nabumali High school from collapsing, whose poor administration before led to debts of over Shs 5billion.
The delegation raised various issues including the creation of Mbale city, reconstruction of roads and the boundary lines between Budaka and Mbale districts.
The President who gave an invaluable historical background about his bush wars in the said forest said he would scrutinize the issues of looking for alternative land for the cultural institution in Bulambuli district.
