As the Parliamentary candidates begun their election campaigns today, the Uganda Electoral Commission warned the candidates against using abusive language against their opponents and inciting violence.
The EC also says all candidates must stick to the agreed campaign programme and ensure they do not interfere with campaigns of fellow candidates.
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Badru Kiggundu told journalists in Kampala today that all parliamentary candidates are also not to campaign on the day any presidential candidate is in their respective district, to give the presidential candidate the opportunity to be the only person campaign on that day.
The EC says presidential candidates have only one day in each district, and it is vital that they are not interfered with by parliamentary or other candidates.
Dr. Kiggundu says all campaigns must take place within the scheduled time of 7am and 6pm, and candidates and their supporters should ensure they don’t disrupt public order.
According to the EC, a total of 1,270 candidates have been nominated to contest for the 238 seats of directly elected members of Parliament, while 443 candidates are competing for 112 district women representative seats.
