The Uganda National Examinations Board has released the 2010 Primary Leaving Examinations showing improved performance compared to 2009.

UNEB's Mathew Bukenya

UNEB Secretary, Mathew Bukenya says 512, 057 primary seven candidates sat for the 2010 Primary leaving examinations in 10,906 centers across the country. He says unlike in 2009, boys performed better than girls in the 2010 PLE examinations.

He says Social Studies was the most well done subject, following by Science, English and Mathematics in that order.

The results show that Kampala and Wakiso were the best performing districts, while Nakapiripirit in Karamoja was the worst performer.

UNEB says it registered 80,934 pupils from private schools and 431,123 from UPE schools, compared to 2009, where the examinations body registered 68,301 pupils from private schools, and 444,918 from UPE schools that provide free education under the government program introduced in 1997.

Performance in 2010 UNE PLE results

The 2010 UNEB Primary leaving examination results indicate that 42,195 pupils passed in first grade, 22,819  passed in second grade, 109,757 passed in grade three, while 58,935 pupils passed in grade four.

A total of 58,668 (12%) pupils passed in grade U meaning they failed to pass any of the four subjects. This however is a reduction compared to 2009 where 70, 266 pupils failed representing 14.4 % of the pupils who sat.

UNEB says that results of 1,227 from 32 schools were cancelled for examination malpractices, among them pupils of Mountain Camel, Makindye Junior, King Fahd Islami primary school in Kampala, among others.

Uganda Minister of Education Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire

While receiving the results at Statistics House in Kampala on Thursday morning, the Minister of Educations and Sports, Geraldine Namiremebe Bitamazire expressed happiness at the improved performance of students in UPE (Universal Primary Education) schools.

She said the government will continue to put more emphasis on school’s supervision, improving teachers’ welfare and scholastic materials to ensure improved primary education in the country.

She appealed to civil society organisations to help sensitise parents on their responsibilities especially providing uniform, pens, pencils and food to pupils in UPE school.

Bitamazire advised parents of pupil who will not qualify for admission into Universal Secondary Education to join technical institutions and get hands on skills.

The examinations body is continuing its initiative to offer the exam results to people on their mobile phones. You can get the results of your child by sending an sms typing PLE and then the index number of your candidate (no space between PLE) and index number, and sending to 6600. The sms service from SMS Media will be charged 500 Uganda shillings.
