The Former Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom, Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere has said that Buganda kingdom through its elders (the Bataka) have decided to support Inter party Coalition and Forum For Democratic Change presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye in the 2011 elections.
Ssenwogerere who heads a pro Buganda political pressure group called Suubi says many Buganda leaders are disappointed with the failure of negotiations of Mengo with NRM failed.
He told journalists at news conference in Kampala on Monday that Buganda elders had evaluated all the presidential Candidates and had found IPC’s Besigye to have the best plans that will benefit Buganda kingdom.
However Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister, John Baptist Walusimbi says the kingdom is not officially supporting any presidential candidate but only urging its subjects to vote candidates who have the interests of Buganda Kingdom and Uganda at heart.
The ruling National Resistance Movement led by President Yoweri Museveni has been blaming Ssemwogerere and another ex-Buganda Katikiro, Dan Muliika of leading a group of other Buganda opposition leaders to involve the king of Buganda into politics.
Besigye is the closest contender to Museveni in the run up to the February 18th elections, and every presidential candidate fancies support from Buganda, the country’s most populous tribe.
