The government has assured Makerere University students and parents that there are no immediate plans to increase tuition fees at the university and or other public universities.
The Minister of Education and Sports, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire says students should be reassured that they will continue to pay the same amount of fees that they have been paying.
This follows Friday’s strike at Makerere University in which Anti-riot Police was fought battles with students protesting the proposed increase in tuition fees from 3 million to 6 million shillings per student per academic year.
The Auditor General produced a report suggesting that the tuition be increased to 6 million shillings a year to courses in Humanities 9.6 million shillings a year for engineering and 11million for medicine.
The students had planned to move from their campus and March on streets to parliament to present their petition to the speaker of parliament protesting the proposed increase.
The university public relation officer Ritah Namisango however says, it was just a proposal which had not yet been discussed for approval by Makerere University Senate or the University Council.
